To promote cultural ties and a better understanding of Japanese culture, art and music, the Japan Foundation is organising a Jazz evening at the FICCI auditorium on March 19. The event will include a performance by Japanese group Fonte.
The group, which comprises four Japanese artists, will be joined by two Indian musicians. Formed in 2004, the group has a number of studio albums to their credit. The diversity of the band, made up of musicians who also have a thriving solo career, ensures that unique sounds are created each time the group comes together to perform.
‘Fonte’ means ‘fountain’ in Portuguese, which the group says represents the “fountains” of creativity that are conjured each time they are on stage.
Among the artists performing are flautist Masami Nakagawa, whose jazz album recorded in the motif of famous classical songs, has been well-received across the world.
Kazuhiko Obata, who specialises in Brazilian music, will play the guitar, while Gennoshin Yasui will take care of the percussion instruments. He is known for his ability to play the pandeiro, a Brazilian instrument that is similar to the tambourine. Kiichiro Komobuchi will play the electric bass and double bass player.
The two Indians joining the group are Gaurav Mazumdar and Mohit Lal. While Gaurav is trained in Hindustani violin and learnt the sitar under Pt. Ravi Shankar, Mohit is a classical, folk and fusion tabla player. The event will start at 7 p.m. at the FICCI auditorium on March 19. Entry is free.
