At a time when the Samajwadi Party (SP) is struggling to deal with the internal conflict between party chief Mulayam Singh and his son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, the Trinamool Congress is aligning with the junior Yadav.
Trinamool vice-president Mukul Roy said his party was with Akhilesh Yadav. “We have a very good relation with Akhilesh. He is the most popular leader in Uttar Pradesh,” Mr. Roy told journalists on Monday.
As for the ongoing family feud, he said that it was “unfortunate.” His comments come days after the SP chief revoked the expulsion of Mr. Yadav following a show of strength by the U.P. Chief Minister when several MLAs and senior party leaders sided with him.
In November, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed a joint rally held by the Trinamool and the SP in Lucknow against demonetisation.
