Rajasthan varsity V-C resigns after court rap

January 09, 2017 10:57 pm | Updated 10:57 pm IST - JAIPUR:

Rajasthan University Vice-Chancellor J.P. Singhal has resigned from his post following the strictures passed by the High Court against his appointment in August 2015. His appointment, recommended by a selection committee of the State government, had become controversial as it was found that he did not possess the necessary qualifications.

Mr. Singhal resigned on Sunday, a day before a Division Bench of the High Court was to finally hear a writ petition challenging his appointment. The court observed last week that Mr. Singhal was not fit for holding office “even for a day” and said that it would pass an order if the university did not cancel his appointment. The writ petition in the High Court was filed by former bureaucrat Satya Narayan Singh, former High Court judge I.S. Israni and two others, contending that Mr. Singhal was appointed the Vice-Chancellor because of his political affiliations.

Mr. Singhal is general secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh, an outfit associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
