A police sub inspector was injured when a mob took to stone pelting after a chopped head of a calf was found in Surat on Monday.
The police had to lob 30 rounds of teargas shells and resort to lathi-charge to disperse the angry mob and to bring the the situation under control in the communally sensitive area.
“The police used lathi-charge and tear gas shells to disperse the mob. Several persons were detained in order to bring the situation under control,” Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said.
The police also conducted a flag march in the affected area to ensure that law and order situation was maintained, as shops remained shut due to fear of escalation.
According to sources, around 20 workers of Bajrang Dal were taken into custody after they tried to vandalize and torch meat selling shops.
