96 injured in Odisha quake

At least 96 panic-struck persons sustained injuries following the earthquake of moderate intensity that had hit Odisha on Wednesday evening.

The earthquake having a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 9.51 pm with its epicentre in the Bay of Bengal about 310 km South-East of Bhubaneswar.

As soon as the tremor was felt, many people injured themselves when they jumped off their roofs and balconies. Two persons were getting treatment in Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar, for sustaining fracture. In Bhubaneswar, 37 persons were rushed to Capital Hospital while 36 persons reportedly got first-aid treatment in the Jagatsinghpur district. Following the earthquake, people were on the streets for several hours in the night out of fear.

“The tremor was felt almost in all districts of Odisha. However, there was a sigh of relief as INCOIS, Hyderabad, India’s Tsunami Warning Centre, reported that there was no tsunami threat for India,” said the State government.There is no report of any major damage or death due to earthquake. However, there is report of some cracks in a few buildings at different places.

Meanwhile, Archaeological Society of India said the earthquake did not cause any damage to any monuments in the State. “On Thursday, we got all monuments surveyed to ascertain if monuments had suffered any damage in the earthquake. Fortunately for us, no new crack has been observed in any monument. Our team members surveyed temples in Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar,” said Bhuvan Bikram, Superintending Archaeologist of ASI, Bhubaneswar.
