Over 50 people were feared drowned on Wednesday in this Bihar district after an overcrowded boat sank into the swollen Kosi river, officials said.

The boat carrying over 50 passengers was caught in a whirlpool and sank as they were crossing the river near Hari panchayat area, to attend a sharadh ceremony on Wednesday evening, District Magistrate Kumar Ravi said.

Though the civil and police officials are yet to announce the casualty figures, villagers claim that 20 bodies have been fished out, he said.

Since the tragedy has occurred near a remote place, inaccessible by road, officials are facing tough time to reach the spot, Mr. Ravi said.
