Five school students were killed and several others injured in a road accident on Monday in Siwan district of Bihar.

The accident occurred when a pick-up van carrying the students to a coaching institute collided with a sports utility vehicle near Tirbhedia village. Five of them died on the spot. The injured were taken to the government hospital in town.

Violence breaks out

The enraged family members of the injured students reached the hospital and alleged that there were not enough doctors and the children did not receive prompt medical attention. They indulged in violence and ransacked the hospital premises, setting parked ambulances and vehicles on fire.

Police attacked

The police reached the spot and tried to pacify the mob but they started pelting stones on policemen. The police then resorted to mild baton charge to disperse them.

Top district officials reached the spot and brought the situation under control by shifting the injured to private hospitals for better medical treatment.

The State government announced a compensation of Rs. 1.5 lakh to the family members of each victim.
