5 rare turtles seized from eatery in Assam

Five rare turtles were seized from a roadside eatery and released into the wild in Manas National Park, forest officials said on Friday.

Following specific information provided by an NGO, a joint team of the police, forest and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau personnel raided the premises of the dhaba and seized the five turtles on Thursday.

The eatery (dhaba) owner, however, managed to escape and a search has been launched to nab him. A case has also been registered against the man, the officials said.

Released in Manas National Park

The turtles were released in the Barpeta Road range of Manas National Park by forest personnel, the officials added.

An NGO called ‘Corbie’ is engaged in ensuring release of animals and birds in their natural habitat from domestic captivity. - PTI
