Five policemen were suspended following the custodial death of the main accused in the acid attack on a 23-year old girl in Ghaziabad. The youth, named Lakhan, was arrested by the Vijaynagar police late on Friday night and he died on Saturday in a Ghaziabad hospital, where he was taken by the police after he attempted suicide in lock-up.

The Station House Officer of Vijaynagar police station, a sub-inspector and three constables have been suspended and departmental proceedings have been initiated against them.

Suicide attempt

According to a police spokesman, Lakhan tried to hang himself in the lock-up at around 9.00am on Saturday, while unofficial reports said he consumed poison. Lakhan was, however, overpowered by policemen, who admitted him to the Sanjeevani Hospital in Ghaziabad, where he passed away, the police spokesman said.

A resident of Jain ka Purwa in Mainpuri, Lakhan was working at a gas agency in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad. The State IG (Law and Order) R.K. Vishwakarma said Lakhan and his accomplice, who were riding a motorbike, threw acid on a 23- year old woman, who earned her living as a domestic help, near the Republic Society crossing at around 7.15am on Friday. The woman received 50 per cent burns on her face and hands.
