Karimganj police on Saturday night arrested five persons, who were allegedly involved in the attack on ruling Congress legislator from Barkhola constituency Rumi Nath and her second husband Jakie Zakir at a hotel in Karimganj town on Friday night.

Karimganj Superintendent of Police Pradip Pujari told The Hindu that the accused were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate who remanded them in judicial custody.

The SP said protesters staged a road blockade in some areas against the attack on Ms. Nath.

However, the police persuaded them to end their agitation. A mob had barged into the hotel in which Ms. Nath and Mr. Zakir had checked in and beat them up.

Ms. Nath's marriage with Mr. Zakir stirred up a controversy with her first husband lodging an FIR on May 22 that she had been kidnapped.

She also said her divorce papers were ready.
