43 killed in two accidents in Himachal Pradesh

Forty-three people, including 34 members of a marriage party, were killed in two accidents in the remote Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday.

A truck carrying the marriage party veered off the Sohra-Sherpur road in the Dalhousie sub-division in the early hours and plunged into a gorge, killing 34 people and injuring eight others.

In the other incident, all nine persons were killed when a pick-up van fell into a gorge at Thala Sirhari village of the Bharmaur sub-division.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said a probe would be conducted.

Making a suo motu statement in the Vidhan Sabha, Transport Minister Mahendra Singh Thakur said a truck carrying 40 members of a marriage party plunged into a gorge at Kakirya near Sherpur.

Mr. Thakur said a magisterial probe would be conducted as there were reports that the accidents were caused by human negligence.

Assembly Speaker Tulsi Ram, who represents Bharmau of Chamba in the Assembly, said the kin of the victims should be given a compensation of Rs.1 lakh each.
