4 dead as heatwave scorches Gujarat

The intense heat wave across Gujarat has claimed four lives in the last two days as the mercury edged past 40 degree Celsius in most places. State authorities have asked people to take measures to prevent sunstroke.

According to authorities, on Monday two persons died of sunstroke in Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar respectively while a couple reportedly died in Kutch on Sunday.

As per the bulletin of the met department, Kandla airport with 43.3 degree Celsius remained the hottest place in the State during last 24 hours. Ahmedabad recorded a high of 42.1 Celsius.

“We have asked people to take measures to protect themselves. Additionally, we have put all the district hospitals on alert and have directed them to provide immediate medical assistance to the people affected by sunstroke,” Gujarat Health Minister Nitin Patel said. “People should not go out between 1 pm to 5 pm when the temperature is highest,” he said.

“We have asked people to drink ORS, homemade drinks like 'lassi' or buttermilk and lemon water, coconut water, which help to re-hydrate the body,” the government stated in a press release.
