Three temporary underground camps near the Loktak lake in Manipur were destroyed and a huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered on Saturday. Four youths were arrested.

Jhalajit, Additional Superintendent of Police of Imphal West district, told journalists that an intelligence input was received about the presence of some rebels near the lake. Crack troopers from the police, the 12 Maratha Light Infantry and the 33 Assam Rifles raided some of the suspected hideouts.

There was no firing from the rebels. At least three temporary camps of the banned People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) were destroyed by the raiding parties.

One rebel and 3 collaborators were picked up.

In the past, there had been several encounters and ambushes in the region.

Four AK 47 rifles, 8 lethod guns, 8 Chinese-made hand grenades and a huge quantity of ammunition were recovered from these camps. Mr. Jhalajit said the arrested rebels were subjected to hectic interrogation.

In another raid, the police arrested a rebel of the Kangleipak Communist Party (Noyon group).
