One person from Kandara and two from Tefna village died in landslips caused by incessant rains in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Wednesday, S.A. Murugesan, District Magistrate, Chamoli, informed The Hindu .

Sonali, Kandara, and Tefna villages were affected when rainfall on Tuesday night caused landslips. Debris filled houses and more than 20 houses were damaged, Mr. Murugesan said.

Relief camps

Relief camps for residents of Sonali, the most severely affected village, have been organised in schools and colleges near the village.

People of the other two villages have been shifted to houses in the neighbourhood. Food and quilts have been distributed to the villagers and the process of compensation also started, he added.

One body has not been recovered yet.

The landslips occurred after continuous rainfall on Tuesday night. Mr. Murugesan said the landslips happened between 6 and 7 on Wednesday morning.

Anand Sharma, Director, Dehradun Meteorological Centre, said, “More than moderate rainfall (around 60 mm) was recorded in the affected areas in Chamoli district on Wednesday morning.”

Sharma said in the next 48 hours light to moderate rainfall would occur at many places in the State and more than moderate rainfall (40 to 60 mm) will take place at one or two places in the hills.
