2,500 trees make way for kanwariyas

April 21, 2018 11:26 pm | Updated 11:27 pm IST - Meerut

The district administration of Meerut has finally started work on a project involving removal of 2,500 trees to expand and pave a concrete pathway for the kanwariyas (pilgrims who go to the Ganga to collect holy water) in the district.

The tree-cutting commenced on Friday.

Officials said traffic on the Delhi-Meerut-Haridwar highway will not be affected during the kanwariya pilgrimage once the pathway is complete.

“The proposal was an old one which got stuck due to objection from the local Forest department. District Magistrate Anil Dhingra sorted out the matter with the Forest Secretary,” said a senior district official.

The proposal involves expansion of 108-km pathway, starting from Muradnagar till Purqazi in Muzaffarnagar.

The width of the road is likely to be expanded by 7.5 metres.
