In the wake of reports suggesting that thousands of electors in Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai and Pune, were unable to vote in the recent Lok Sabha election, as their names were missing from the voter list, the Election Commission embarked on an elaborate drive and enrolled 20 lakh voters ahead of the Assembly election in the State.

They include 1.94 lakh voters in Mumbai and 2.66 lakh in Pune. New voters make up the bulk of those enrolled.

Massive effort

In a mammoth effort as part of the special summary revision, the commission sent over 26 lakh letters, along with enrolment forms, to all those whose names had been deleted in Mumbai, Thane and Pune.

A statement said 4.5 lakh Speed Post letters were delivered and the rest were returned as the addresses were incorrect or the addressees had shifted residence. The final roll is up on the websites of the Chief Electoral Officers and the Returning Officers.

The statement said that eligible citizens who were still not enrolled could include their names up to 10 days before the last date of nomination of candidates for the Assembly election.

The commission mounted a special information and motivation campaign involving film star Aamir Khan on radio and television.
