The flood situation in northern Assam's Lakhimpur district turned critical on Wednesday with over 2 lakh people being forced to take shelter in 250 relief camps over the last 24 hours.
A total of 2,11,410 people in 197 villages have been severely affected by floods in the Subansiri, Drupang, Ranganadi rivers and other tributaries of the Brahmaputra following heavy downpour in the hills of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.
Track washed away
The Drupang washed away a portion of the Rangiya-Murkongselek metre gauge rail track on Tuesday night, disrupting traffic.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi made an aerial inspection of the flood-hit areas of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Jorhat districts and the Kaziranga National Park. He asked the Deputy Commissioners to step up rescue and relief efforts, and monitor the flood situation on a daily basis to ensure that there was no shortage of safe drinking water, rations and medicines.
Altogether 513 villages in six districts have been hit by floods over the past 24 hours.
