July 20, 2012 03:49 am | Updated 03:49 am IST - MUMBAI:

Two persons were killed and more than 30 were injured when an express train rammed a derailed local train at Kasara in Thane district on Thursday night.

The engine of the Vidarbha Express derailed and the train hit a local train, whose four coaches had already jumped the rails, Central Railway spokesperson A.K. Singh told The Hindu on the phone.

The Railways are yet to ascertain the number of casualties. “So far, there is no confirmation of the exact casualties. We are still taking stock. The accident relief train has reached the spot. The general manager, along with senior officers, has also reached the site of the accident,” Mr. Singh said.

The Thane rural police said 30-35 people were injured and they were admitted to the Kasara hospital. The injuries were minor mostly, and the impact of the collision had caused one of the bogies to climb onto the next one. Rescue operations were hampered by rain and darkness; the local people pitched in to remove the injured.
