Picnic near water bodies ended in tragedy when 11 youths died in two drowning incidents in Pune and Nagpur districts of Maharashtra.

Four students from a private educational institute drowned in the Pavana dam reservoir in Lonavla, 50 km from Pune.

According to the police, the group reached the reservoir with five others on motorcycles after the end of their internal exams.

On Sunday afternoon, one of the youths ventured into the reservoir. As he began drowning, three others went to his rescue but they too were swept away. All the four bodies were fished out on Monday, said the National Disaster Response Force.

In the second incident, a group of 12 went for a picnic near the Mangrur lake on the outer fringes of Nagpur city. Nine of them unmoored a boat anchored nearby.

The youths were busy clicking their pictures on mobile phones when the vessel capsized.
