At least 11 people, including three minors, were killed in rain-related incidents in different parts of Uttar Pradesh. Sonu Pathak (24), Jai Ram (46) and Neeraj (18) were killed on Saturday morning after being hit by lightning in Pilibhit district, the police said.

Five labourers were buried alive on the outskirts of Allahabad when the wall of a place of worship, beside which they were sleeping, collapsed on them last night following heavy rain, they said.

“The incident took place in Kohni village falling under Jhusi police station area of the district’s trans-Yamuna region. The victims had attached a plastic awning to a dilapidated wall of an Eidgah under which they used to sleep at night,” said Dinesh Sah, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Circle Officer in-charge of Jhusi police station. He said repair work was underway at the Eidgah which was very old and decrepit and the deceased were daily wage labourers engaged in the work. “People noticed the bodies, buried under the debris, this morning,” the DSP said.

In Saharanpur, three siblings, Rumana (17), Farhan (14) and Rehman (11), were killed when their house collapsed due to heavy rain in Mankamau area.

According to the Met department, major amount of rainfall was recorded in Kheri 23 cm, Baharaich 20 cm, Mau, Gonda 13 cm each, Bansi, Chillaghat, Pratapgarh, Phoolpur 11 cm each, Ayodhya, Kakrahi, Basti, Moradabad and Bareilly 7 cm each.

Rain and thundershowers are likely at most places in the State on Sunday, with heavy to very heavy rain very likely to occur at isolated places.

Rain likely in Bihar

People of Bihar may get some relief from humid conditions prevailing in the State since past one week or so, as the Met department on Saturday predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in the State from tomorrow.

“There will be moderate rainfall in Bihar tomorrow while the State is likely to witness heavy rain for the next three days from day after tomorrow (i.e. from Monday),” Patna MeT Department Director Ashish Sen told PTI.

It may be noted that the monsoon had weakened in Bihar for a week as the monsoon trough line had gone down towards south i.e. towards Odisha. This resulted in negligible to light rainfall in the past one week in the State. But now the monsoon trough line has come up once again, Mr Sen said.

In its forecast for next 24 hours, the Met department said that Patna and Gaya are likely to witness generally cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunderstorm. Bhagalpur and Purnea are likely to witness generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers tomorrow, the Met official said. Patna recorded the maximum temperature of 35.5 degrees Celsius while Gaya registered 36 degree Celsius. Purnea registered maximum temperature of 32.4 degrees Celsius while Bhagalpur was the hottest place in Bihar which recorded 36.4 degrees Celsius, it said.

Patna recorded 75 per cent of humidity both in the morning and evening while Gaya had a humidity level of 66 per cent in the morning while 55 per cent in the evening. Bhagalpur had a maximum humidity of 79 per cent and a minimum of 81 per cent. Purnea recorded the maximum level of humidity of 79 per cent and 92 per cent. Purnea recorded a rainfall of 8 mm till 5:30 pm today while Bhagalpur received a rainfall of 0.8 mm. Gaya had nil rainfall and Patna, the capital, reported traces, the Met department said.

Widespread rain in Rajasthan

Widespread rainfall lashed several parts of Rajasthan leading to a dip in day temperatures in the State, the weather department said. Since yesterday till Saturday morning, Shahabad in Baran district recorded maximum of 15 cm rain, followed by Malsisar (Jhunjhunu) which received 12 cm rain, the Met department said. Chaksu (Jaipur), Choth ka Barware (Sawaimadhopur) recorded 11 cm, while many other places received below 10 cm rain. The Met department has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in the State during next 24 hours.

“The South-West Monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of western Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, most parts of Haryana, entire Chandigarh and Delhi and Punjab and some parts of eastern Rajasthan,” a senior official of the India Meteorological Department said. Several parts of Rajasthan, Odisha and Punjab, among other States, also received heavy rainfall.
