11 killed, 2 injured in U.P. accident

Eleven persons were killed and at least two injured when a jeep skidded off a bridge and fell into a river in Jalalpur area of Uttar Pradesh's eastern district of Jaunpur on Friday night.

The victims were returning after attending a funeral at Varanasi when at 11.00 p.m. the driver lost control of the vehicle which broke through the railing of the bridge and fell into the Sai River, a government official said.

Ten persons died on the spot. Three others who were injured were rushed to a local hospital in the early hours of Saturday, where one died. The other two were later shifted to Varanasi for treatment.

The bodies were handed over to their relatives after the post mortem.

Expressing grief over the accident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the relatives of the dead, Rs. 50,000 to those seriously injured and Rs. 20,000 to the injured.
