Ten persons, including a three-year-old girl, were killed and four injured when their jeep fell into a gorge near Purori in the Chakrata region of Dehradun district on Wednesday.
Vikas Nagar police station Circle Officer Swapn Kishore Singh said: “The jeep was going from Hayo-Tangri to Vikas Nagar in Dehradun district when it fell into a gorge.”
Devendra Singh, employed with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, was driving the jeep when the accident occurred.
The CO said according to the preliminary enquiry, the driver, who too died in the accident, seemed to be responsible for the mishap.
While eight persons died on the spot, two others died while they were being taken to a nearby hospital.
“Those who were injured have been referred to a hospital in Dehradun,” he said. This was the second incident in Chakrata within a month. In the accident in November, six persons had died which too was caused due to the carelessness of the driver.
Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Wednesday gave orders to the Transport Department to carry out a time-to-time checking of vehicles and drivers especially in hilly areas of the State.
