‘Onion price no cause for tears’

Higher rates temporary, no ban on exports

March 14, 2013 04:16 am | Updated 04:16 am IST - NEW DELHI

Ruling out a ban on onion exports in the wake of a spurt in domestic prices, the Centre has decided to cut down intermediaries that govern the market chain to bring down the price. Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, said the price rise was temporary and attributed it to unseasonal rains in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and closure of the Azadpur Mandi here for four days.

The price had soared for about a fortnight from January 22, Mr. Sharma said, adding it had since stabilised.

Mr. Sharma said the country had adequate stocks.
