One gets bail in Kalaburagi ragging case

The Second Additional District Sessions Judge M. Premavathy on Friday granted conditional bail to one of the three accused nursing students of the local Al Qamar Nursing college who were accused of forcing another nursing student to consume toilet cleaner, while rejecting the bail application of the other two students.

Krishna Priya, fourth year nursing student, was granted conditional bail by the judge while the prime accused Lakshmi and Athira were remanded to judicial custody till July 22. The Judge granting the bail application of Krishna Priya using the special powers under section 439 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The judge in her order said that taking into the severity of the crime committed as per the material available before the court, Krishna Priya has been granted bail while the bail applications of Lakshmi and Athira were rejected.

As per the material available before the court Krishna Priya had reportedly asked the victim K.P. Ashwathy to sing and dance as part of the ragging and asked her to jump like a frog, while the other two accused who are shown as Accused No. 1 and No. 2 in the case had allegedly took part actively in forcing Ashwathy to consume the toilet cleaner.

Poignant scenes were witnessed in the district court complex with middle aged mothers of Lakshmi and Athira weeping inconsolably when the three girls were brought to the court in a police van from the Kalaburagi Central Prison. All the three accused who were allowed to talk to their parents were also seen crying. All the times the accused girls kept their faces covered. The judge in her conditions imposed in the bail order of Krishna Priya asked the accused girl to be present before the investigating officer whenever summoned.
