PIL over pictures showing model sporting bikini with image of Hindu Goddess

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Press Council of India and the editor of a Hindi daily on a public interest litigation (PIL) objecting to photographs of an Australian model wearing a one-piece bikini that bore a picture of Hindu Goddess Lakshmi on it. The Lucknow Bench, comprising Justices Abdul Mateen and Jayashree Tiwari, directed the respondents to file a counter-affidavit in six weeks.The court also directed the petitioner to file a rejoinder, if any, in two weeks after the affidavits were filed.

The Bench appointed local lawyer Prince Lenin as amicus curiae in the matter.

Taking suo motu cognisance of newspaper photographs in which an Australian model is shown wearing a bikini with pictures of Goddess on the front and back sides of the garment, the Allahabad High Court on Monday decided to take up the matter.
