Despite an assurance by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that those responsible for the alleged rape of an elderly nun at a convent school in Nadia district will be arrested, the police have failed to apprehend any culprits.
Those who were detained earlier were released and a few more were detained in the adjoining North 24 Parganas district.
What has come as a surprise is that the police already have detailed versions of witnesses and CCTV footage of images of the culprits. The Criminal Investigation Department has released their sketches.
Senior district police officers said along with those seen in the footage, others will be involved in the crime.
The motive of the crime is still not clear. The local people suggest that dacoits, without any insider information, could not have scaled a 10-foot wall and took the nuns across several rooms where the cash was kept.
Recently the school authorities were threatened with dire consequences over a dispute involving school administration.
That the criminals may have used the porous international border with Bangladesh to their advantage is a possibility. Ms. Banerjee had said that searches were being conducted in the border areas. BSF sources told The Hindu that the State has asked for help of sniffer dogs.
