The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had sought its support for the proposed Trinamool Congress’ no-confidence motion against the United Progressive Alliance government but it would take a call only after a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance.
“Ms. Banerjee spoke to [Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha] Sushma Swaraj on the telephone, but Sushma Swaraj has gone to Mumbai to attend the funeral of [Shiv Sena chief] Bal Thackeray. Once she returns, the NDA will take a decision on the issue,” senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi told journalists here.
“In the opinion of the BJP, this government has lost the mandate of the people,” he said. “That is why we will sit and discuss. If the numbers are not adequate and the motion fails, the government becomes safe for the next six months during which another such motion cannot be brought. Again if the motion is successful, we must immediately provide an alternative or elections will be called.”
Dr. Joshi pointed out that leaders including Mulayam Singh of the Samajwadi Party and Mayawati of the Bahujan Samaj Party had said they were opposed to FDI but they might come to the aid of the UPA government. “We will decide our strategy when the NDA meets.”
The Trinamool’s decision was taken “in its own wisdom,” Dr. Joshi said. The party did not have the numbers even to ensure that the no-confidence motion was admitted. “They [the Trinamool] would depend on other parties’ support. So despite that if the Trinamool leadership decides to go ahead, it should be prepared for whatever the consequences are.”

Mamta at least lacks principle. UPA has absolutely no principle at all, except of course swindling.
This latest act of Mamata has shown very clearly her bankruptcy of
principles and hunger for power. This also proves that the INC had
committed a big blunder in supporting this maverick and opportunistic
person during last elections in Bengal. The INC central leadership
should have listened to it's state level leaders. If the INC had not
supported TMC, Mamata would not have come to power in Bengal. By her
recent steps before, during and after the Presidential elections she
stands completely exposed as a person bereft of any policy, principles
and moral attitude. Since all the major parties like the INC, BJP and
the Communists have tasted her maverick ways and undependable nature,
I am sure, she is not going to be trusted by any one. This is always
the faith of a person who has back stabbed too many people in short
political life.
It appears that Mamata Banerjee is counting on BJP for support at the
national level. Fair enough! But does that mean she is ready and willing
to rejoin NDA? But how would that work out in a province where NDA is
not even distant fourth? How would she exclaim her position to her
electorate who had been loath to accept a communal party as their
positional compass?
A disgraceful approach in the political field. She opposed the small car project of Tatas
when the communist party was in power in Bengal and thereby sounded a death knell to
Industrialization. She is now prepared to topple the Manmohan Govt with the support of
The Bjp. She is prepared to steep so low, and all the political parties in India should be
Cautious in forging ties with an opportunist like her.
She cannot pay back the state's debt. Now she is determined to
destabilise the Central Government. How patriotic?! We need more
leaders like her...
