June 11, 2014 08:09 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 06:55 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Wednesday issued a notification clearing the way for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe into the alleged gang rape and murder of two minor girls at Badaun in Uttar Pradesh last month.

The UP government had decided to recommend a CBI probe into the gruesome incident following public outcry.

The victims’ families had also expressed reservations over the investigations carried out by the State Police.

The local police have so far arrested five of the accused persons, including two police constables Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav, in connection with the case.

The teenaged cousins went missing on May 27 and the next day, their bodies were found hanging by a tree near Katra Sahadat Ganj village. The incident had triggered a series of protests by political parties and locals.
