Terming poverty a “curse” and considering it a “greatest challenge before us”, President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said the Narendra Modi government is committed to the welfare of the poor people. The President was addressing the joint session of Parliament to highlight the proposals of the NDA government.

“My Government is dedicated to the poor. Poverty has no religion, hunger has no creed, and despair has no geography. The greatest challenge before us is to end the curse of poverty in India,” Mr Mukherjee said.

The President said the new government will not be satisfied with mere “poverty alleviation” -- it will go about vigorously to eliminate poverty.

Poor will have the first claim on development, the President said and added that Modi government will focus its attention on those who need the basic necessities of life most urgently. It will also “take necessary steps to provide security in its entirety to all citizens; through empathy, support and empowerment”, the President said.
