There has not been much progress so far in the investigations into the finding of skeletons near the ancestral home of the former Paschimanchal Unnayan Affairs Minister and Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA, Sushanta Ghosh, officials of the Criminal Investigation Department said here on Tuesday.

Mr. Ghosh, one of the accused in the murders of seven Trinamool Congress supporters on September 22, 2002 — whose skeletons were recovered at Garbeta in the Paschim Medinipur district — is presently in the CID's custody. He is to be produced before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Midnapore, on Wednesday.

Mr. Ghosh was admitted to the State-run SSKM Hospital here on Saturday after he complained of chest pain and uneasiness.

“Not serious”

While hospital authorities said on Tuesday afternoon that he was ready for discharge, Mr. Ghosh was not released from the hospital till late in the evening — this despite a statement Pradip Mitra, director of the hospital, issued which said: “Tests were performed on Mr. Ghosh. The results, however, show no serious ailments that would require him to remain admitted in the hospital. The board of doctors have thus decided to discharge him.”

Asked about the reason behind the chest pain, Mr. Ghosh said that the angiographic tests conducted on him had revealed “nothing serious and the pain appears to be non-cardiac in nature”.

Sleuths of the CID started interrogating Mr. Ghosh after he was transferred from the intensive coronary care unit to a separate cabin. On the ongoing investigations, Mr. Jayaraman, Deputy Inspector General, CID (Operation), said: “The security personnel said that they used to accompany Mr. Ghosh only to official functions while the driver said he could not remember the details of the day. We are still studying the log book of the car used by Mr. Ghosh and also that of the pilot cars to ascertain his location on the day of the killings. We do not have all materials as of now.”

Report sought

Following reports that Mr. Ghosh's house at Chandrakona Road in Paschim Medinipur district encroached on Forest Department's land, Minister for Forest and Wildlife Hiten Barman asked the department's parks and garden section to submit a report by Wednesday.
