Not appropriate to comment on anyone’s marriage: Congress

April 03, 2010 07:57 pm | Updated 07:57 pm IST - New Delhi

Congress said it was not appropriate for any political party to comment on the decision of two individuals on marriage and attacked Shiv Sena for its statement on tennis star Sania Mirza’s plan to wed Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

“I personally think it is not necessary for political parties, especially the Congress, to make comments on the voluntary decision of individuals to marry or not marry,” party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said replying to questions on the marriage plans of Sania.

He said, “These (Shiv Sena) are political parties which have no support base and are desperately trying to get attention. They are marginalised fringe parties. They do not speak for India or represent its voice“.

Sena chief Bal Thackeray yesterday lambasted Sania for deciding to marry Malik and said she is no longer an Indian.

“Henceforth, Sania will not remain an Indian. Had her heart been Indian, it wouldn’t have beaten for a Pakistani,” Thackeray said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’
