The CPI (M) on Saturday said secular and democratic forces would have a bigger role to play as the Congress would bite the dust in ensuing Lok Sabha elections. It said even the BJP would not make it possible as regional and other parties are main stake holders in most of the States in the country.
“Congress will be so badly defeated in the elections that it would not be in a position to stake claim for government formation. Parties with secular and democratic characters would have the most significant responsibility in post-elections scenario,” CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat said in Agartala in backdrop of party’s ongoing central committee meeting.
He alleged, BJP, backed by big corporate houses, is trying to project Narendra Modi as most vital leader, but his credentials made him unfit for the position. “Election results in five States should not be viewed as mood of the nation and I can tell you non-Congress, non-BJP parties including regional parties would gain much in Lok Sabha polls,” Mr. Karat said.
He also said that the central committee meeting had so far discussed current political situation with tags of recently held Assembly poll results, price rise, inflation and organisation matters. The meeting also expressed solidarity with party comrades subject to intimidation and attacks by incumbent Trinamool Congress and government machinery in West Bengal.
Though optimistic about emergence of third alternative, Mr. Karat did not spell out his party’s task and that of Left Front. He said the party would decide about its role only after the general elections.
He said CPI (M) will continue to rally behind all secular and democratic forces to prevent attempts of the BJP to polarize the electorate. Replying to a question, he said, the party welcomed the performance of the Aam Admi Party (AAP) in New Delhi elections, but wants to understand more about its policies and ideologies.
On context of Lokpal Bill he said it should sail through Parliament without further delay along with the amendments adopted by the select committee. On Article 377, he reiterated the support to the Delhi High Court judgment on same-sex rights.
The central committee meeting would come to an end on Sunday. The politburo and central committee members would attend a public rally after the meet.
