The Home Ministry on Sunday advised the coastal States and Union Territories to take appropriate precautionary measures in the wake of an earthquake in the Sumatra Island in Indonesia that triggered fears of a tsunami in the region.

However, it said there was no tsunami threat to the Indian mainland and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands following the quake.

In 2004, a massive earthquake in Sumatra resulted in killer tsunami waves hitting the Indian coast leaving a trail of destruction and loss of human lives.
