The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has reviewed the transfer policy for government employees, who are also caregivers of disabled child, by including those with children suffering from autism in the category.

Through an order dated June 6, the DoPT had exempted the parents of such children observing: “A government servant who is also a care giver of disabled child may be exempted from the routine exercise of transfer/rotational transfer subject to the administrative constraints.”

The “disabled” category then included blindness or low vision, hearing impairment, locomotor disability or cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, mental retardation, mental illness and multiple disabilities.

The DoPT on Monday issued a fresh order expanding the category by including autism in the list. “Considering the fact that the autism spectrum disorder child requires constant caregiver support and it would be imperative for the government employees to take care of their autism spectrum disorder child on continuous basis, it has been decided to include ‘autism’ in the term ‘disabled’…,” said the order.
