The West Bengal Government has not received a response to its requests to Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha to send armed police forces for deployment during the upcoming three-phase rural polls in the State’s 17 districts.

The State has sought for 130 companies of such forces, a senior State official said here on Thursday.

The State government is finding it difficult to meet the shortfall of nearly 700 companies of security forces for deployment in the run up and during the first phase of the polls scheduled on July 2.

It had written to the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday seeking 300 companies of Central paramilitary forces till July 13 in a bid to meet the shortfall.

Stating that some paramilitary forces were already stationed in the State, the official said: “We will have to rest content with whatever forces we get from the Centre.”
