Union Water Resources Minister Salman Khursheed on Friday said there was no need for alarm over China's proposal to construct a power project upstream of the Brahmaputra.

His Ministry was in touch with the Ministries of External Affairs and Environment and Forests.

“There are different views. I do not think we have to be alarmed over this. If there is a position to be taken, we will certainly take the decision. Whatever needs to be done, we will do,” Mr. Khursheed said, responding to a question on his Ministry's stance on the China proposal.

He was speaking to journalists after taking part in the inaugural function of the silver jubilee celebrations of B.S. Abdur Rahman University in suburban Vandalur.

On Pakistan's protests against India's dam-cum-power project in Kashmir across the Kishanganga, a tributary of the Neelam, Mr. Khursheed said the matter was in the International Court of Arbitration in Geneva. “But there are signals that it could be resolved outside it. Fali Nariman is appearing for us.”

On interlinking of rivers in India, he said it was a futuristic project and preparations were still in the preliminary stage. “It could help in resolving some problems, while creating new ones.”
