India has conveyed its sympathies to Japan which has been affected by a severe earthquake and tsunami.
There are no reports of casualties among the 25,000 strong Indian community in Japan which is concentrated in the Kanto and Kansai regions. The Indian Embassy in Tokyo and the Consulate in Osaka are in touch with the community members and verifying the situation on ground. A control room has been established in the Indian Embassy which can contacted on 00813 32622391 to 97, said a Foreign Office statement.
“We are saddened by the loss of life and extensive damage to property and infrastructure,” said letters of sympathy, which also contained offers of assistance from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna to their counterparts. Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao spoke to Ambassador of Japan in India Akitaka Saiki and conveyed her heartfelt sympathies and condolences.
The MEA is monitoring the situation closely and would take all necessary steps required as per exigencies, the statement said.
