The Union government has no plan to introduce any law on religious conversion, Union Minister of Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs Venkaiah Naidu has said. “If someone converts from one faith to another by choice, what is the problem?” Mr. Naidu said, adding that his earlier statement on the issue was misreported.
“The government is considering no proposal to restrict conversion or reconversion,” the Minister said, adding that there cannot be any objection to the ghar vapsi campaign, as long as it is not forced.
Talking to a news channel, Mr. Naidu admitted that certain comments of leaders contributed to the BJP’s defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections. “Hindus believe in peaceful coexistence. Comments such as the number of children that a woman should have did not go down well [with the people],” he said.
Mr. Naidu said the main reason for the party’s defeat in Delhi was the huge promises that the AAP made, particularly with regard to reduction in power and water tariffs. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity still remained high and the verdict was limited to the city.
