Enough force stationed at protest venue: Arup Patnaik
Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik on Monday rubbished reports of intelligence failure on Saturday’s riots in the Azad Maidan area here and asserted there was enough force to control the mob. They had intelligence reports that the protest might turn ugly, prompting them to deploy additional forces.
“Otherwise when do you see a Joint Commissioner [Law and Order], four Deputy Commissioners and an Additional Commissioner on the field in uniform on a holiday for a protest rally,” he asked. A force of around 750 personnel was enough to control mobs running to more than 50,000 people, he claimed. There were around 15,000-20,000 protesters present near the Azad Maidan.
Mr. Patnaik said violence erupted at 3.17 p.m. and the situation was brought under control by 3.40 p.m.
Asked why force was not used earlier to control the rioters, he said the police showed utmost restraint. “Should I have fired, I don’t know. Would you have wanted to see 500 bodies? I was more afraid of my force when 500 jawans were ready to fire, with hands on the triggers. I had to control them first, then turn to the protesters,” Mr. Patnaik told journalists after holding a special meeting with senior officers.
Mr. Patnaik was on the spot within minutes of the situation turning violent. He addressed the crowd from the dais of the rally and appealed for calm, reminding people of the incidents during the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition. The police chief told them he did not want any repetition of those ghastly memories, thus calming down the crowds.
Muslim leaders tendered apologies to him on Monday and expressed their desire to help the injured police personnel. “All the Ulema had come to apologise. That is because they know that the police acted with equity and fair play,” he said.
A magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the police firing and a special investigation team set up to probe the incident.
Officers of the cyber crime unit would be associated with the probe. Many morphed images were circulated among the gathering to oppose the “atrocities” on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar.
So far, 23 persons had been arrested.
Officials said they were looking into whether underworld elements were present among the rioters.
Mr. Patnaik said they were of the opinion that it was not the protesters who were involved in the arson. “It was another mob that came from outside. We have not yet been able to identify the group. But we are going through CCTV footage and the footage provided by camerapersons.”

Every one is responsible for this, even we are. If the Central will
not take any strict action against it this time, It will give rise to
Hindu Against Congress.(we are responsible to elect such impotent
government).
Accept it or not Central is responsible for this, Powers are given in
hands who are complemented with blind vision.
Minorities are no more minors, Please support caste based census for

As Patnaik Sir said, he was trying to poise up situation, But what if
those rioters will disperse and again plan some real big violence?
All 45 Policemen who got Injured, What is their mistake? It would lead
to decrease in spirit of those Cops who were merely doing their
duties?
Is this what secularism is ? How far the Govt and Authorities
responsible for this? Mumbai always suffers, its economic capital of
nation.
45 police personnel were injured (8 of them are reported to be in critical condition) on account of this sensesless violence. The police are blamed whether they take action or not. They cannot even protect themselves without getting approval from political bosses. Not one politician has spoken out against the violence. The media also makes a muted response.
As per police chief's own statement that it is pre-planned. When he knows that it is pre-planned, how he allowed to happen? Why he has not taken action before the outbreak of violence?
If the Mumbai police had enough ingtelligence feed, why they did not prevent the continuous flow of protesters entering CST terminus by train after train? According to the police, they had CCTV clippings of people( violent protesters) entering trains at Kurla station with swords and petrol cans. Then why there were NOT stopped at Kurla itself or on the way? If the police had intelligence alert of violence, why not keep fire brigade and ambulance ready? The commissioner says this is a terror against the state, then why the special anti-terrorist battalion of the police and the central force (which Chidambaram launched a few months back) were not aletered?. This is a total failure of the Mumbai police which failed in hard policing but were more interested in soft targets like restaurants and college campuses for publicity.l
If this was not a case of total intelligence feed how could it happen? If there was intelligence feed the crowd would have been cordoned off to prevent any sort of mischief. It was not only intelligence gathering failure it also was case of intelligence failure.
The picture clearly proves that the riot was going on or went on in
from of the police. In other words, the police was waiting for
political instructions to act.In an interview to a TV channel The
Police Commissioner confessed that they could not act completely, as
they did not want to repeat the consequences of the earlier riots! But
that restrain was rather instructed than realized for the situation,
as they did not interact with the organizers to stop the protest. Had
it was stopped, even these two persons would not have been killed,
women police molested, 50 policemen attacked and injured, etc
