Even as Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Sunday reiterated his opposition to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh taking part in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Sri Lanka this month, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has gone on record that no decision had yet been taken on Dr. Singh’s participation in the meeting.
At an interaction with reporters after calling on Mr. Karunanidhi on Saturday, the Union Minister described as “incorrect” reports in certain sections of the media that the Prime Minister would attend the CHOGM.
Mr. Karunanidhi articulated his point in the light of a report of Channel 4, a London-headquartered television channel, on the torture and killing of LTTE cadre and journalist Isaipriya allegedly by Sri Lankan forces.
Referring to the telecast of the news story on the journalist, Mr. Chidambaram said he too watched it and had no doubts about its veracity.
He wanted Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to identify and punish those who were responsible for the brutal killing of Isaipriya.
Seeking to defend the Congress on the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils, he said his party had never held the position that there were no instances of human rights violations in the last leg of the Eelam War IV between the Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE.
