The All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has impressed upon Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram to ensure that Nitu Singh — the deported scholarship student of the Film and Television Institute of India — returns from Kathmandu at the earliest so that she could complete her studies.
A memorandum submitted to Mr. Chidambaram said this was absolutely essential for her future welfare. It was significant that her parents, who were earlier opposed to her determination not to live with her husband, now fully supported her and were, in fact, helping her to obtain a divorce.
It said: “As a women’s organisation committed to upholding the rights of all women to lead a life free from violence both within and outside the home, the Maharashtra unit of our organisation was helping Nitu — who was suffering from domestic violence and harassment at the hands of her husband Amaresh Singh — for the last two years.
“Unfortunately, the Pune police, instead of extending support to Nitu, succumbed to her husband’s machinations and, most shockingly, facilitated her deportation to Nepal, citing completely specious ‘reasons of national security.’
