The Goa government has sent to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) a report highlighting the steps it has taken after the riotous situation involving Nigerians that unfolded on a highway in north Goa on Thursday last.
Meanwhile, Goan Minister for Art and Culture Dayanand Mandrekar has apologised for calling Nigerians a “cancer.” “I don’t have any ego to apologise and I am sorry for my remarks,” he said. “I had made the remark against those Nigerians who were involved in the Parra and Porvorim incident and not against all Nigerians.”
The report mentions three key issues — ongoing action against those involved in the murder of Obado Uzoma Simoen; legal action taken against the 53 Nigerians involved in the subsequent ruckus at Porvorim, near here; and the State’s resolve to deport foreigners staying illegally. The arrested men are in judicial custody.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told The Hindu that the government had arrested one person in connection with the murder. Most of the arrested Nigerians did not have proper documents, he said. If, however, they were ready for deportation, the State would drop the charges against them.
