A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the death of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, in view of the suspected involvement of the Pakistan-based Inter-Services Intelligence.
In his writ petition, advocate N. Rajaraman said such a probe was necessary in view of the disclosures made by Dr. Sudhir Gupta, head of forensic sciences at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, that he was under pressure to give a report that Ms. Pushkar’s death was natural.
He said that on May 27, Dr. Gupta had filed a complaint with the Central Vigilance Commission and with the Health Ministry that he was pressured by top officials to show that Ms. Pushkar’s death was ‘natural’.
Dr. Gupta had claimed that he did not bow to the pressure and stated in his report that Ms. Pushkar died due to drug poisoning, which could be “suicide or homicide.”
Ms. Pushkar (52) was found dead in a five-star hotel in South Delhi on January 17.
