The National Investigation Agency (NIA), in coordination with the Nagaland Police, has arrested three leaders of terror outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) in Kohima for their alleged role in the recent killings in Assam.

Among those arrested is Ajoi Basumatary (32), the alleged commander of the 3 Battalion of NDFB (S). “It was under his direction and leadership that the massacre took place at Sonitpur in Assam on December 23 last year. In all, 36 persons including women and children were killed and six injured in the attack,” said an NIA official.

The second accused has been identified as Dilip Basumatary (40), who was allegedly responsible for coordinating the outfit’s activities in the reserved forest areas of Assam along the Indo-Bhutan border and the forest reserves along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary. According to the NIA, he was actively involved in the conspiracy behind Assam killings.

“We have also arrested Khamrei Basumatary (35), designated by the outfit as the deputy commander of its 14 battalion. He is one of the leaders involved in the attack in Kokrajhar where 20 persons were killed. He was involved in another attack in the Baksa district of Assam last May,” said the official, adding that seven mobile phones were seized during the operation.

The accused terrorists are being brought to Guwahati for production before an NIA special court.
