The National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday took cognisance of a complaint about beating up of journalists and camerapersons covering the clashes outside controversial godman Rampal’s ashram at Hisar in Haryana.

The journalists had assembled at an earmarked place for the coverage of the developments, but they were allegedly beaten up by the police personnel, according to a complaint submitted to the NHRC.

The Commission issued a notice to the Haryana Director-General of Police, calling for a report in the matter within two weeks. The Congress joined media collectives in condemning the attack on reporters and camerapersons. “This assault on the media is a demonstration of the fact that the Haryana government did not wish to be put under media scrutiny in handling the Hisar ashram crisis,” the Congress said in a statement.
