An NGO working for the victims of Bhopal Gas Tragedy on Monday said that it would try to meet U.S. President Barack Obama when he visits the country next month to press for extradition of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson.
“We will seek an appointment with Mr. Obama to mount pressure on him for the extradition of former Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) Chief Executive Officer(CEO) Anderson from U.S.,” Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan Convenor Abdul Jabbar told reporters here on Monday.
He said that his organisation would also request Mr. Obama to exert pressure on Dow chemicals which has taken over UCC to pay higher compensation to the victims of the world’s worst industrial disaster.
Even 25 years after the disaster, the Bhopal Gas Tragedy victims have not been paid adequate compensation, Mr. Jabbar said adding that the victims suffering from toxic leak were not getting proper health care.
“It is Obama’s moral duty to ensure that Anderson and UCC were brought to book,” Mr. Jabbar said adding that he should take the same stand which he took following oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The same yardstick should be applied in regard to Bhopal Gas Tragedy, he remarked.
We want more money as compensation for the Bhopal Gas Tragedy victims, Mr. Jabbar said.
