It will benefit businessmen, elderly, children and spouses, says Chidambaram
Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Friday said New Delhi and Islamabad could soon sign a more liberal bilateral visa regime after the Pakistan Cabinet cleared it. He appealed for expeditious dismantling of all trade barriers.
He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Integrated Checkpost at Attari, 33 km from Amritsar. The state-of-the-art facility, established on 118 acres at a cost of Rs.150 crore, was dedicated to the “nation and India-Pakistan peace and harmony.”
Talking to journalists later, Mr. Chidambaram said though details could not be revealed now, the new visa regime would facilitate the movement of businessmen, the elderly, children and spouses. India had already agreed to the new regime, and was awaiting an appropriate decision from the Pakistan Cabinet.
Responding to the sentiments expressed by speakers at the meeting, Mr. Chidambaram appealed to the Indian and Pakistani Commerce Ministers, Anand Sharma and Makhdoom Amin Fahim, to initiate the process for dismantling all trade barriers, “so that we trade every goods produced in our respective countries.”
Mr. Sharma highlighted the need for trade along the land route of all items, except those on the ‘negative list,' instead of confining it to the present 137 items. The Integrated Checkpost would go a long way in the economic integration of the region. “Wealth must be generated, redistributed and reinvested.” It was imperative that the next generation should not inherit the bitter legacy of the past, he said.
As he raised the slogan, Pakistan-Hindustan dosti zindabad, evoking an enthusiastic response from the crowd, Mr. Fahim said his government had started issuing multiple visas to Indian businessmen. He hoped that the trial period, which currently was for one year, would be extended soon.
However, the day belonged to the Chief Ministers of Indian and Pakistani Punjabs, Parkash Singh Badal and Shehbaz Sharif, who made emotional speeches, amid traditional bonhomie. While Mr. Badal appealed to Mr. Chidambaram not to hesitate any further in opening the doors to each other, Mr. Sharif said both countries had lost a lot in human resource, and economically, by fighting wars and adopting hostile positions. He sought immediate resolution of critical issues such as Kashmir and river water sharing so that both countries could partner in progress and enjoy prosperity.
Mr. Badal demanded that the Integrated Checkpost handle all those goods traded between Karachi and Mumbai. He recalled how Punjab was the biggest and richest State in India before Partition, and how it suffered in the post-1947 era. He wanted the Hussainewala border in Ferozpur district reopened and urged Pakistan to allow a special corridor from Dera Baba Nanak to Kartarpur Sahib for the benefit of pilgrims.
Mr. Sharif suggested creation of an “economic free zone” between the two countries to attract investment and accelerate trade. He asked India and Pakistan to learn from the western countries, which had created the European Union, a common currency and the European Parliament, and came to the rescue of Greece. “Why cannot we be honest to ourselves?” he asked, calling for a commitment from both countries to cut down on defence expenditure and to spend more on poverty alleviation, health and education.

India has to be careful while dealing with Pakistan. We get a very stubborn attitude from Pakistan when asking for help to tackle terrorism. Liberal visa policies, means less checks involved.
There should not be any compromise related to security. have US lessened the strict policies with regards to its security after 9/11 ? Then why is India doing it, makes no sense to me.
It's like let more people be slained, and then we will toughen the policies again. We will the dialate the ties for 5 years and again loosen our grip. Again there will be an Indo Pak cricket match and 2 PM's from both the countries will get together and talk on same issues that both parties are reluctant to solve since past 65 years.
Please understand, people are not fools, they are just busy trying to arrange their everyday piece of bread. We vote for you and we pay our taxes. Please don't forget 1965, 1972, hijacked planes, brave martyrs of Kargil and 26/ 11 before you make another decision.
this is practical solution we find pakistan punjab is our punjab,,so why this isolation by politicians,,better learn fast than never,,trade brings prosperity,,new ideas and friendship, open mind and make public more friendlier and brotherhood thrive, it is good step, welcomed,,
Please remove the border between the two countries & let & India & Pakistan be one country before partition. I think this will be the bagiest moment in the history of the world. In bollywood a Film should also been intiated on this issue that how India & Pakistan can re-united. This unification will be not acceptable for the fundamentlist from both the countries but there are more liberlist than fundamentlist in both the countries. Indai & Pakistan dosti Zindabad.
Very good news, but i am still in a state of confusion either to feel happy or sad about this step forward by the GoI, because every time they do this within no time there will be disaster by terror groups. Hope same mistakes are not committed once again.
I agree with Mr. Shariff's views. We can have confiderate state of India comprising of Pakistan and Bangladesh with satellite countries like Nepal and Bhutan. However, who will bell the cat of Khalistan. We may end up having another country on our border instead of an integrated Union.
What is the urgency in accepting liberal visas. They always want to crate some trouble to India and its people. Hold it for 2/3 years. They need to be watched closely and not be invited with open arms. Let them come back to India without calling themselves as a seoparate country including Bangladesh.
Considering the damage to India and Indians done over last forty years (post Bangladesh liberation) by Pakistan originated cross border terror (Jihad) outfit, we should not distribute visas forgetting the past. The terror chiefs are very much in power, look at Jud and LeT jihadists, who are respected (?) by Pakistani politicians and a section of army, ISI and influential people. The world knows who rules Pakistan. So I strongly agree not to be over friendly to bring in the crocodiles of terror inside India, any more.
Very immature move by the Indian Government; it will only facilitate easier movement of terrorists from across the border. When are we ever going to learn ?
India has forgotten the past, now UPA govt is trying to get the attention of people by making some foreign policies on the name of the Trade & business. But the people in India still heeling their wounds given by the Pakistan.when they will get justice...???
Nice gesture from both the countries to curb out the bitterness between the two. Hope it continues in the future helping both the country to prospor instead of wasting time, money and energy in sharing hatred against each other.
