In a report on the Badaun incident to be submitted to the Central government on Tuesday, the National Commission for Women has said the Uttar Pradesh administration and the local police should be held solely responsible for the horrifying gang rape and murder of the two young girls.
The report, prepared by a NCW team that met the family of the deceased and the villagers, says: “The two sisters were gang-raped and murdered due to the lax attitude of the police and the apparent hostile environment created by [the] State government against people from lower socio-economic sector.”
NCW chairperson Mamata Sharma said if the police had taken action on time the incident could have been avoided. “We will ensure that stern action is taken against the guilty,” she added.
The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), in a report on Monday, also held the “local police and State government responsible for the crime.” “Our team visited the Sadatganj village in Badaun district of U.P. where the incident occurred and we hold the local police and State administration solely responsible for what has happened,” said AIDWA general secretary Jagmati Sangwan.
According to her, timely response by the police could have saved the lives of the girls. “The parents of the girls begged the police for action after they heard about the kidnapping. It was only after they headed out to the district police office that the local police chased them and told them to look for their daughters in the mango orchard. When they reached there, they saw the horrible sight of their daughters hanging dead from the tree. The families of the girls are convinced that the policemen were also part of the gang that raped and killed their daughters,” the Aidwa report notes.
