A Naval offshore patrol vessel, undergoing retrofit at the Naval Dockyard here, caught fire on Wednesday evening even as the Eastern Naval Command is conducting Operations Display in the sea off the Ramakrishna Beach as part of Navy Day 2013 celebrations.

INS Konkan, the patrol vessel, caught fire around 4:30 p.m. resulting in a greater part of the ship being gutted, according to sources.

“A fire had occurred on the ship reportedly due to a short circuit and fire fighting is going on. There are, however, no casualties in the accident,” Police Commissioner B. Shivadhar Reddy told The Hindu on Wednesday evening.

Naval officials could not be reached for comment.
