A nation-wide campaign will be launched for championing the cause of Irom Sharmila who has been on an indefinite fast since November 4, 2000, demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.

A spokesman of the Save Sharmila campaign said that it will begin on October 2 and conclude on December 10. On the last day, which falls on the International Human Rights Day, the activists will submit signatures collected from all over the country to the President of India.

The campaign will be conducted in all cities.

When social activist Anna Hazare started his fast for a stronger Jan Lokpal Bill, he had sought cooperation from Ms. Sharmila.

Reports say that Mr. Hazare had expressed his willingness to visit Manipur to lend support to her campaign.

The spokesman said the Manipur government had not heeded her demand despite her 10-year-long fast. In the past, the Union Home Ministry had planned certain amendments to the AFSPA. However the Defence Ministry had objected, saying that the armed personnel needed some protection.
